Visual Arts with Teresa Flores

Grades 6-8

Teresa Flores is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Los Angeles. Flores has led public programs at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and Spike Art Quarterly in Berlin. In over ten years of teaching, she has taught Visual Culture at California State University, Fresno and studio art for Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and California Arts Academy. She holds an MFA in Public Practice from Otis College of Art and Design and most recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles for her public engagement project, Experimental Quesadilla Lab.

2020 Summer At Home Lessons

New Video Lessons will be shared every Monday beginning June 8, 2020.

Lesson 1. Shadow drawing pop art– Choose an object from home that creates an interesting shadow on paper and trace the shadow in five positions across the paper. Positive, negative and intersecting spaces are filled in following an analogous color scheme and patterns.

Lesson 2. Blind contour self-portrait – Draw the contours of your face and hair without looking at the paper. Draw your self from three different angles the use the markers to make marks, color fields and patterns in the spaces that bring out your mood and expression.

Lesson 3. Scavenger hunt still life – Pick two complementary colors and gather 3-5 objects from home that are those colors. Arrange the objects into a still life and draw them using the demonstrated marker techniques.

Lesson 4. Everyday mandala – Gather multiples of objects from around home and arrange them into a mandala. Draw the objects how you arranged them and add patterns and shapes to fill in the mandala.

Lesson 5. Marker Techniques paper flower wreath – Follow along with the marker techniques as you craft a paper flower wreath inspired by Claude Monet.
