2020 Summer At Home Lessons

New Video Lessons will be shared every Monday beginning June 8, 2020.

Lesson 1 : The introduction explains each part of the graduate defense and its purpose. The process is broken down into 5 easy to understand steps so that students and their families can begin on their own. Step 1 is gathering artifacts or evidence focusing on what types of artifacts students need.

Part 2 : Completing the Artifact Reflection – Students will use their three artifacts as the basis for filling out the reflection worksheets. The worksheets are an excellent tool for students to use to help them write their essay (next step). The worksheets help them begin to organize their thoughts and function as a pre-write for the essay.

Part 3: Writing the Reflection Essay – The reflection essay is the most important part of the graduate defense. Students need to write a 2 ½ to 3 page essay that asks students to reflect on their time as a student and how they have grown as a person and as a student. Students are welcome to show their individually in the essay but a detailed outline on what to write and how to use the artifact reflection worksheets is provided for students who need more support.

Part 4: Creating a Slide Presentation – Modern jobs and college classes all require students to be able to create meaningful presentations. During this video students will learn how to create visually interesting and clear slides that are well organized. The lesson will cover some graphic design elements, organization ideas and formatting.

Part 5: Doing your Defense – In part 5, students will learn strategies that will help them present to a room full of teachers or adults. Strategies will focus on organization, pacing, use of voice and body. The lesson will cover both in person and online presentations.
