Visual Arts with Meriel Stern

Grades 2 – 5

Meriel Stern has a BA from Barnard College and MFA from Otis Art Institute/Parsons School of Design. In her studio practice Meriel specializes in clay, wire and fiber based sculpture, as well as making ceramics. She has worked as a Teaching Artist to students of all ages for over 30 years, most recently on special assignment to Cleveland and Roosevelt Schools in PUSD, ceramics teacher for Arising Homeschool Collective, as well as being A.I.R. and Creative Director at PUC/Milagro Charter for the past 15 years. This is her 4th year with PEF Summer Enrichment where she has taught the very popular “Mud Shop” and other mixed media classes.

2020 Summer At Home Lessons

New Video Lessons will be shared every Monday beginning June 8, 2020.

1- Drawing Games: “Scrunchy Drawing”
Learn to use both “chance” and “choice” in this fun drawing exercise. (copy paper, black marker and colored pencils, markers or crayons)

2- Drawing Games : “Busy Hands Mandala”
Use repeated patterns and colors to make this meditative graphic of a moment in time. (paper, pens, jar lid or other round items to trace)

3- Sculptural Figures : “ My Message Wrap Doll”
Create small figures with materials from your daily life, attach a special message to hold secrets, worries or messages of kindness (paper or cloth napkins, rubber bands, twist ties and yarn, found objects)

4. Paper Mosaics: “Painting with Paper” (looking at Alma Thomas and Jack Whitten)
Looking at the work of 2 important African American artists we will cut and paste an array of colored papers to create colorful abstract art ( cardstock or magazine cover, scissors, glue stick)

5. Patterns in Jewelry: “Magazine Beads”
Make your own beads from “found paper” and string patterns on a necklace. Learn to make hook and eye closure with wire. ( magazines or wrapping paper, scissors, Pencil or BBQ stick, glue stick, wire, straws and/or extra beads)
